It was only a week ago that I experienced a taste of real independence, I went on my first holiday abroad with one of my friends to Marmaris, Turkey.
I had never visited Turkey before and neither had my friend Holly, so we were both unaware of what to expect. I had heard mixed reviews off friends and family telling me to "be careful" and "stay together" as I was warned of the hype over blonde hair and blue eyes, but I was also informed that Turkey is one of the loveliest places to visit. The scariest part of travelling without the comfort of a parent is the amount of self reliance such as finding the correct gate and remembering essentials such as your passport and boarding card. The amount of people in the airport is unbelievable, and I took enjoyment in people watching, guessing where they were travelling to and what they would get up to.
Personally, I have only ever experienced beach holidays in hot countries such as Spain so with Turkey I was unsure of what beach/pool facilities were available. When we landed it was 7pm (Turkey is 2 hours ahead of England) and had to sit through a 2 hour transfer; so we didn't arrive at our hotel till late that night. We had experienced a full day of travelling so we didn't feel completely up for going out, our first night resulted in having a few drinks at the hotel bar.
Each morning we would wake up to breakfast which consisted of a basic selection but just what we needed. I cannot remember the previous time I stayed at a hotel as on family holidays we tend to rent out a Villa, However I loved staying at the hotel. The staff were so kind and friendly, making you automatically feel welcome and getting to know you personally- as a customer I found this effective in encouraging guests to visit in the future. We soon got to know the other guests who we meet during the night time entertainment or around the pool in the day, which was great as a family community is soon created.
When we went to Turkey £1 was 4 Lira which made everything incredibly cheap! A four course meal was 20 Lira which is the equivalent of £5 and it was so tasty. I did a lot of shopping whilst in Turkey, purchasing fake designer goods for a quarter of the price they were sold in the UK. I had been warned about the locals being forward to tourists, but personally I thought they were simply being friendly. Due to it being our first time in Marmaris and just the two of us, we didn't participate in any out of the area activities as we didn't quite have our bearings and felt uncomfortable, but this didn't dampen our holiday at all. The weather was sunny and hot each day making coming home to rainy Derbyshire even harder for us.
I would definitely recommend visiting Marmaris and staying at The Palm Garden Keskin hotel- great people, great food, great atmosphere. We had such a lovely holiday, it just went too quick. I can't wait to book my next one!
