The Boy Next Door review

"The Boy Next Door is a 2015 American thriller film directed by Rob Cohen and written by Barbara Curry. The film stars Jennifer Lopez, playing a high school teacher named Claire who, in the midst of a divorce, has a one-night stand with a younger neighbour Noah, who develops a dangerous obsession with her.[4]" - wiki

When I first saw the trailer advertising this film I was intrigued. Firstly to see JLO taking on the lead role in the film ,and secondly to see if I could find an interest in the American Thriller genre. After reading various reviews claiming the film to be "One of the stupidest films ever made"- (rotten tomatoes), I went in to the film open minded, preparing myself for either half decent entertainment or humorously bad entertainment.

The storyline follows Claire, English teacher and mother of a teenage child. Claire is experiencing a divorce with cheating husband Garrett and whilst her son is away she engrosses in a one night stand with her new young neighbour Noah, whom turns out to be a psyco, obsessed stalker.

What lets the film down are the scenes that make you hide behind your jacket- but not in the way a thriller film should make you. I'm on about hiding due to the cringe of the scene itself . For example, certain shots show JLO and Guzman speaking lines of poetry to one another - this does not appeal to the audience, it makes us want to get up and leave. Furthermore the quality of acting is low (JLO should stick to singing on stage with Pitbull)to the extent where I feel my sister could've done a better job. The film also creates various enigmas which are unsolved at the end of the production, for example relationships? does Garrett recover? does life return to normal? this is really irritating.

The film does engross the audiences attention as the narrative progresses; I did find myself intrigued in the overall conclusion to the plot (which can I say was rather disappointing. cliché and weak). It certainly has its highs and lows but I can only recommend you watch it yourself and grow on your own opinion. It is most possibly the guiltiest pleasure of this year.
