Last year I took part in the annual race for life 5K event at Woodbank park, Stockport in aid of Cancer Research UK. This was my first independent running event so I found myself experiencing a whirlwind of mixed emotions in the build up prior to the event.
The fundraising, unitising run was something I had wished to take part in for a long time, as it was raising money for a charity I feel passionate about as well as a challenge for both myself and my motivational skills.
After signing up for the 5k run and contributing my £15 entry donation, I was instantly sent a sponsor form to which was placed in a local café and with the help of many local residents, friends, family and Facebook donations I raised an incredible, generous donation of £250! This was an overwhelming achievement and I am so thankful to everyone who donated to the brilliant cause.
I arrived at the event coated in pink attire, wearing a t shirt with the slogan 'Cancer we are coming to get you' embarked over my chest feeling excited, nervous and ready to embrace the challenge. The atmosphere was overwhelming, countless people stood creating a pool of pink; there must have been over 2000 people, both runners and supporters supporting the charity that early Sunday morning. When taking part in the run itself I would run past various participants with badges on their back stating they were running in memory of their mother, sister, neighbour, best friend, colleague. In support of their cousin, grandma, teacher, step mum. The names were endless and it really raised awareness of the suffering countless people are experiencing.
Overall, I strongly feel taking part in the race for life is one of the best decisions I have ever made. The sense of achievement and knowledge that you've done something for someone that will have a huge impact on both them and their families lives is an incredible feeling. The mood and atmosphere at the event was both powerful and emotive, and unexplainable flood of emotion was present with us at that event. I can not thank everyone enough for the generous donations received for such a great cause! Thanks.
